IMPROVE Yourself During Uncertain Times

We understand that the current times are a disruption to your daily routine, and it is reasonable to feel stressed and frightful of this pandemic. Fear is a normal reaction, but it is vital to remind yourself that while it is crucial to take precautions, it is even more essential to trust yourself to do the right things and care for both your body and mind. Here are some resources the library encourages, to IMPROVE yourself during these times of stress:

Imagination: Use visualizations to relax your mind. The app “Stop, Breathe & Think” is an emotional wellness platform. You can check in with your feelings, practice mindful breathing, and broaden your perspective using personalized meditation and thought-based activities. Get in a comfy spot and quiet place to take a few moments to focus on your breathing and refocus your mind.

Motivate: Find motivation in your circumstances. Reconnect with friends or take the time to learn what you've always wanted to. Pick up a new hobby using the scope of the Internet: Curious about knitting, or how to use Photoshop? Learn conversational Korean and bake cookies with only three ingredients. There is an infinite supply of tutorials online to learn just about anything through channels on YouTube. Or explore the past using the library's resources like Ancestry.Com or Art That Changed the World.

Physical activity: Take some time to feel the sun; go out for a walk or jog! Releasing your endorphins, through physical activity, not only diverts our attention from feeling stuck in a rut but is a change of scenery and allows time for reflection. Run with your favorite playlist, or be a hero in the mission against zombies through the app, “Zombies Run.” Different activities for different types of emotions: running for anger, yoga for clarity; walking for perspective; and a dance party for some fun. Move, you will feel better.

Read: Unplug and escape into another world. While accessing the library physically to read books is not currently possible, there are several ways to use the library’s digital collection, which includes ebooks, audiobooks and magazines. You can enjoy a new title, re-read your favorite books, flip through a magazine, and stream movies & music, all at your fingertips on your computer or phone. For books, click here. For magazines, here and for streaming, here.

Overcome: Embrace the challenge that comes with this pause. Stay positive and remember to do the best you can. You are not alone and your feelings and concerns are valid.

Volunteer: Give yourself the gift of giving back. Volunteer to raise money for a cause you are passionate about and inspire others to make changes. Help spread the word to crowdfund relief efforts in which you have a personal interest. Create masks to help flatten the curve and to donate to your local organization or distribute safely to friends. Even something as simple as spreading cheer through beautiful displays of sidewalk chalk, painting rocks, and any creation with an upbeat message will make you feel better than expected. You can even earn community service hours for your efforts.

Evolve: You can follow your own evolution and find brightness in yourself by journaling, exercising, and exploring new interests throughout this time. Remember, you are not alone! Plant growth is an excellent timeline by which you can watch yourself evolve. Plant something, using seeds to grow an egg-carton garden, or with a DIY sprouted avocado seed plant, by following this tutorial.
