In the Middle Grades Book Suggestions

Hey there SHPL 9-12 year olds! I know being in the middle of a quarantine, being in the middle of remote learning, and being in the middle of getting cabin fever can be a little frustrating, but on the bright side, you’re in the middle of a great age for literature!  

Middle grade books are amazing, and there are so many excellent and exciting ebook & audiobook choices available to you remotely through our online resources at South Huntington Public Library.  Take a look at these suggestions and maybe borrow a few through Overdrive, Hoopla, or Axis 360

   Endling: The Last by Katherine Applegate (fantasy)

Small Spaces

   Small Spaces by Katherine Arden (horror)

Are you in the mood for creepy thrills and serious chills? Arden has written a story that delivers just that. One day Ollie comes across a book that describes a tragic tale and a sinister being that grants wishes but requires a horrible price in return.  The next day, she and some friends find themselves in a dangerous situation that leads her to believe that the book might not have been fiction! Gulp!

New Kid

   New Kid by Jerry Craft (graphic novel)

 Have you read this Newbery Award-winning graphic novel yet?  If not, what are you waiting for? Jordan Banks is a creative kid who wishes he could attend art classes instead of the elite private school that his parents are making him attend.  Feeling out of place in his neighborhood and at school, Jordan is going to have to learn the difficult skill of being yourself no matter where you are.  The story and the art in this graphic novel are both wonderful, and definitely worth a read!

Home Sweet Motel

   Welcome to Wonderland: Home Sweet Motel by Chris Grabenstein (humor)

Unteachables

   The Unteachables by Gordon Korman (realistic fiction)

When a teacher nearing retirement is assigned a classful of “unteachable” students  that no one else wants to deal with, a battle between teacher and students begins - but soon this war turns into something else, something more. This bunch of misfits just might have found the perfect fit.  Funny, sweet, heartfelt, & fast-paced, this book was a delight!  Korman has written many other great middle grade titles as well- check out others by this well known author.

Gauntlet

   The Gauntlet by Karuna Riazi (adventure)

In a storyline reminiscent of Jumanji, Farah is upset when she receives a lame board game for her birthday.  When she begins to play with it, her brother interrupts and gets trapped inside the game, forcing Farah and her friends to enter the game realm and do battle with the evil man in charge of that world.  Both this title and the sequel (The Battle) are available in ebook form!
