Community Service for SHPL residents currently in Grades 6-12
- Monthly Community Service: Virtual Talent Show
Calling all musicians, dancers, writers, magicians or performers of any kind: earn community service this month by showcasing your talents at the library! Please submit a 5-10 minute video of your act to ehughes@shpl.info and receive one hour of community service. Teens can submit up to 3 videos to earn 3 hours of community service.
Guidelines: Must be sent as an .MOV or MP4 file. No profanity or inappropriate subject matter. Must be emailed by Sunday, February 28. All community service forms will be emailed out on Thursday, March 4.
Please send all the below community service activities to ysprograms@shpl.info or to jgriffing@shpl.info with the title “COMMUNITY SERVICE” in the subject line. Please include your first and last name, age, grade and school in your email. Please be patient as it might take a little time for us to send a virtual community service letter to document your service. If you have not received anything after 2 weeks of your submission, please feel free to contact us by email or by phone at 631-549-4411 ext. 205.
- Make a phone call (We know, so old fashioned!) to a relative or friend who is safe at home: they will appreciate it! Send us an email of when you talked, who you talked to, and about what (We don't need specific details. “Grandma and I chatted about going to school in the 1950s” is enough). You can do this twice per month for a maximum of 2 hours of community service.
- Create a Google slide thanking health care professionals and workers. 1 hour of community service.
- Create two Google slides recommending a book that is in the YA Library. The first slide should have the Title, author and picture of the book. The second slide should have a review of at least three complete sentences stating why you should read the book. Teens can submit up to two book recommendations for the month for a maximum of 2 hours of community service.
Many community service opportunities are also available as online programs. Check our monthly and weekly newsletters and our library program calendar to see what is available. The majority of these programs require registration with a valid SHPL card and are available to those in grades 6-12. Questions? Please ask!
