December Community Service for Young Adults

  • Make a phone call (We know, so old fashioned!) to a relative or friend who is safe at home: they will appreciate it! Send us an email of when you talked, who you talked to, and about what (We don't need specific details. “Grandma and I chatted about going to school in the 1950s” is enough).  You can do this twice per month for a maximum of 2 hours.

  • Monthly Community Service: December Trends : From December 1 to December 31, we want to know what everyone is up to! What are you binging? What are you reading? What games are you playing? We want to hear all about it! Earn 1 hour of community service for each trend you tell us about. Visit https://forms.gle/akeP8e15BU9rvBun6 to learn more, see how to format your trends and get started. A paper copy of these instructions will also be available in the YA room for those who need it.  Patrons can submit up to 3 trends to earn 3 hours of community service for the entire month.  Community service certificates will be emailed out on Thursday, January 7.

These activities require you to send us a short video file (mp4 format preferred) with you speaking.  In many cases these videos will be used in a montage for our social media.  Each item may be submitted once per month for 1 or 2 hours of community service each.

  • Send us a video of yourself recommending a good book to read and reasons why. We recommend that you write out what you plan to say about the book as well as stating the full title of the book and the author. This should be one to five minutes long. 2 hours of community service.
  • Send us a video thanking health care professionals and workers! Tell them how much you appreciate all their hard work and dedication. 2 hours of community service

               OR

  • Create a Google slide thanking health care workers. 1 hour of community service.

Please send all community service activities to ysprograms@shpl.info or to jgriffing@shpl.info with the title “COMMUNITY SERVICE” in the subject line. Please be patient as it might take a little time for us to send a virtual community service letter to document your service. If you have not received anything after 2 weeks of your submission, please feel free to contact us by email or by phone at 631-549-4411 ext. 205.

Many community service opportunities are also available as online programs. Check our monthly and weekly newsletters and our library program calendar to see what is available. The majority of these programs require registration with a valid SHPL card and are available to those in grades 6-12. Questions? Please ask!
